My friends, I didn’t make it any further in my quest for silver or gold. But I got this bronze medallion, and that’s not too shabby. I was spared having to cut lunch short and sit through awards rehearsal, plus I didn’t have to write a speech and wait on pins and needles to find out if I’d won at the end of the conference. Whew!
Seriously, the whole experience has been a blessing, start to finish. Attending the conference is a gift, let alone being invited to a private reception with the other semi-finalists. You’ve never seen such a humble group of high-quality folk. We were all saying the same thing: “I’m in last place, trust me. I shouldn’t even be here. No way I’m making the finals or winning, but I’m thrilled to have made it this far.”
It’s rare to get to spend time with people who share your passions. I met several who became more than acquaintances, and some of those guys might prove to be lifelong friends. I had appointments with owners of publishing houses and learned craft and character from highly accomplished speakers. It was a full schedule, it was tiring, exhilarating, and forced this elite-level introvert out of his shell. Have you ever seen a turtle ‘sprinting’ across the road? That was me. So grateful for all of it.
I jest about being off the hook from delivering a speech, but I couldn’t help thinking about it in the back of my mind on the drive there, just in case. Would you indulge me? For these words apply to the semi-final award as much as winning. It would have gone something like this . . .
“I like more than half of you half as well as you deserve – wait, this is someone else’s speech. Sorry.
“Truly, I’m honored beyond words. Thanks to my wife and son for all their support. Thank you, ACFW. Thank you, judges, for donating your time. I’ve prayed blessings on you for the sacrifices you make. Not only this year, but for many years.
“Never mind how many years, previous attempts, let’s not get into that. It’s never truly unsuccessful, though, is it? All who put in the hard work of trying and opening their hearts to feedback. God bless all the contestants, as I am blessed to be here in your company. There are gems to be gleaned for all who seek them. I ‘met’ my editor through my first, ahem, failed entry in this very contest.
“This feels like the end of a long journey, and it is. But it’s also the start of a new one. For us believers, to whom the destination is known, the fullness of life derives from the journey. I’m humbled to share it with you, my fellow travelers.”

You did better than most and you tried your best and I’m proud of that. I’m so fortunate to have a father that likes writing books about medieval stuff!
Thank you. I’m fortunate to have a son who likes writing as well!
